Dream Motorcycle Ride – June 19 to June 25, 2017

I believe everyone who loves motorcycling have their own version of a Dream Motorcycle Ride, as someone who has travelled 9 Provinces, 49 states several times, and now 1 Territory, this trip will go down of one of the best.  I believe the criteria for a great ride is: fantastic weather; good roads for the most part; fantastic camaraderie; taking advantage of the sites and points of interest; and mingling with the locals.  This doesn’t just happen; it takes a lot of time and effort to put a ride like this together, and it’s all to the credit of Brian Hooker, who worked out every single detail.

The following is a brief trip itinerary:

·         Riders: Kim Coubrough, Stu Hartt, Lyle Higgins, Brian Hooker, Ron Syroishka.

·         Day 1, Monday - Greater Calgary area to High Level, Alberta, approximately 1192 kms, temperatures low ~7°, high 22°.  It was a 3:00 a.m. start, spotty rain showers nothing to get your rain gear on for.

·         Day 2, Tuesday - High Level to Yellowknife, NWT, approximately 736 kms temperatures low - 14°, high 24°.  Visited the 60th Parallel Information Centre. We rode into Yellowknife at the height of the Franklin Festival where they closed many downtown streets. The festival was on the eve of the Statutory National Aboriginal Day (Northwest Territories) with all kinds of food and artifact kiosks, show and shine for cars and bikes, and live entertainment.  We were warmly welcomed by The NWT Riders Association representative Robin Weber and the locals.  We all became members of that association.

·         Day 2b, Tuesday – 10:00pm - Yellowknife, up the Ingraham Trail to the north, to where the payment ends.  Approximately 115 kms total. We joined about 20 bikes from the NWT Riders Association and witnessed firsthand the Summer Solstice, sunset: 11.38 p.m., sunrise 3.39 a.m.  It was an amazing experience. They actually opened the (closed/after hours) Tim Hortons for the group at Midnight, till we were done coffees.  Turned in about 2am at the hotel.

·         Day 3, Wednesday, temperatures low ~11°, high ~20°.  – This is a NWT statutory, with all kinds of aboriginal events taking place, with most shops and business closed.  We did the tourist thing and visited some of the historical sites including “Ragged Ass Road” and, enjoyed the local cuisine at the Wildcat Café with a juicy delicious Bison burger and a scrumptious Arctic Char at the Bullocks Bistro. We successfully performed some electrical surgery on Kim’s bike.

·         Day 4, Thursday - Yellowknife to High Level, approximately 798 kms; temperatures low - ~11°, high 21°.  Another visit to the 60th Parallel Information Centre. There was a noticeable absence of wild life other than the occasional deer, but we did witness 3 bull Bisons along the highway.

·         Day 5, Friday – High Level to Prince George, BC, approximately 933 kms, temperatures low - ~10°, high ~24°.  We left Peace River and arrived at Grimshaw AB which is mile 0 of the Mackenzie Highway, then on to Dawson Creek BC which is mile 0 of the Alaska Highway.

·         Day 6, Saturday – Prince George to Nelson via Kamloops, Vernon, Kelowna, back to Vernon, Needles Ferry, Nakusp, to Nelson, approximately 1085 kms, temperatures low - ~10°, high ~24+°.

·         Day 7, Sunday – Nelson to home, approximately 780 kms, temperatures low - 11°, high 32°. We stopped in the Riders Ranch which is located approximately 16 kms east of Creston, very cool place.  Took the Balfour Ferry, we entered Idaho at Kingsway border crossing and worked our way to Libby MT and then on to Eureka for lunch at Trappers.  From there we headed home stopping at Fernie to fuel up.

·         Brian’s bike total: 3,671 miles, 5,909kms in 7 days.

It was an amazing trip and besides everything stated earlier, we did two provinces from top to bottom and two states. Furthermore, it is simply amazing how a group of five riders can come together and are so unified in the type and style of ride that we all so enjoyed.

All in all, it was a crazy awesome ride.
